Is a Husky really stupid?
They sit at the bottom of every "smartest breeds" ranking. They also problem-solve their way out of "escape-proof" yards. Both are true.
The famous Coren intelligence ranking puts the Siberian Husky around 74th out of 138 breeds. The ranking measures one thing: how many repetitions a breed needs to learn a new command, and how often it obeys on the first try. By that definition, yes, Huskies score low.
By any other definition of intelligence — independent problem-solving, environmental adaptation, route memory, working without supervision — Huskies are off the chart.
Working intelligence vs obedience intelligence
- A Border Collie excels at obedience intelligence — fast learning, fast response, eager to please.
- A Husky excels at working intelligence — making the right decision in a snowstorm with no human input.
- These are different cognitive systems. Both are forms of intelligence.
If your Husky ignores 'sit' but figures out how to open a sliding door with their nose, that is not stupidity. That is the breed working exactly as designed.
