Training & Recall

Crate training a Husky without the screaming

The crate is not a prison and it is not optional. Done right, it is the safest, calmest place in your dog's world. Done wrong, it is six weeks of trauma.

Half the new owners who message us about 'my Husky hates the crate' did the same three things: bought the crate too small, put the dog in it for too long too soon, and used it as punishment. The crate is a den, not a jail. Build the association slowly and the dog will choose to sleep in it for the rest of his life.

Buy the right crate

  • Size: he can stand up, turn around, and lie down stretched. Not bigger — a too-large crate breaks toilet training.
  • Material: wire crate with a cover for adults, plastic airline-style for puppies and travel.
  • Position: in a quiet but not isolated room. Living room corner is ideal for week one.

The 7-day build

  • Days 1–2: door open, treats inside, no closing. He goes in and out freely.
  • Day 3: feed all meals inside the crate, door open.
  • Day 4: close the door for 10 seconds while he eats. Open before he finishes.
  • Day 5: extend to 1–2 minutes after the meal.
  • Day 6: short closed sessions while you sit nearby and read — 5 to 15 minutes.
  • Day 7: leave the room briefly. Return calmly. Build slowly from there.

Rules that prevent disaster

  • Never use the crate for punishment.
  • Never let him out while he is screaming — wait for a 5-second pause, then open. Otherwise you reward the screaming.
  • Adults: max 4 hours during the day, 8 hours at night. Puppies: much less.
  • Always exercise and toilet first. A tired, empty Husky settles. A bouncing one will explode.

Done right, by month two, you will find your dog napping in the crate with the door open. That is the goal.

Bring it to the pack
