Leash work without losing a shoulder

Huskies are literally bred to pull. Your job is to redirect that, not erase it.

Most Husky leash problems are caused by treating the dog like a Labrador. The solution is not stronger correction, it is a smarter set of tools and a clearer expectation about when pulling is allowed.

What works

  • Front-clip Y-harness for daily walks — disrupts the pull mechanic without restricting the shoulder.
  • A separate, dedicated harness or canicross belt for when pulling IS allowed (jogging, skijoring, scooter).
  • Two-channel rule: the dog learns that the harness predicts whether pulling is allowed.
  • Reward loose-leash position frequently with treats at hip height.

Aversive tools (prong collars, e-collars used for corrections, etc.) tend to backfire on Huskies. The breed is famously stubborn under pressure and shuts down or escalates rather than yielding.
